Mental Health and Weight Loss

Our mind and body are very important in the weight loss process. The mind-body connection plays a pivotal role in our ability to accurately assess hunger and fullness. We eat meal after meal, snack after snack, barely aware of what we’re eating and how much we’re consuming. Mindfulness in eating is simply engaging your brain into the eating process to increase your overall awareness of eating. Mindful eating is powerful because it keeps you in the present and can help you facilitate change.

Testimonials

REX Bariatrics helped me to get my life back. I was at rock bottom when I came to the practice. My PCP was just telling me to “eat less and move more”. He was not “seeing me or hearing me”. Dr. Sharp understood from day one that I was asking for and needing “help” and got me on their program, explained the different surgeries, helped me understand I had a disease and helped me regain my self confidence. Now years later, I have a new life.

Eating is a behavior but it is impacted by psychological correlates. It is important to be aware that eating is multi-faceted but is typically treated simply from the behavioral standpoint. This is why traditional dieting doesn’t work……Diets tend to focus on only the behavioral aspect of achieving weight loss. Healthy eating is more complex than just making healthy food choices. Three components must be successfully and simultaneously addressed to revert unhealthy and create healthy eating:

  • Behavior (Traditional Dieting)
  • Thoughts (Cognitions/Psychology)
  • Emotions (Affects/Psychology)
