Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch

What is LAPAROSCOPIC DUODENAL SWITCH surgery?

The biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS), also referred to as the duodenal switch, switch, or DS, is formed in three main steps. In the first step, the stomach is stapled into a long tubular shape, called the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. The detached portion of the stomach is removed. The second step involves dividing the small intestine (duodenum) just beyond the sleeve and attaching it to the lower 3 meters of intestine to form a bypass. The first connection is the duodenoileostomy anastomosis. The bypass reduces the absorption of the small intestine by approximately 60%. In the third step, the bile and pancreatic juices are redirected to the lower 1 meter of the intestine to reduce fat absorption, using a second connection or ileoileostomy.
