How To Prepare for Bariatric Surgery

During the consultation, the surgeon will provide the patient with instructions to prepare for the surgery. Although some instructions are given according to the patient’s specific case, there are basic pre-op instructions for bariatric surgery patients.
  • Educate yourself about the procedure you are having
  • Ask questions, the dietitians, navigators, APPs and doctors are all here to help you
  • People who smoke, vape or use nicotine containing products will need to quit completely a minimum of 2 months before surgery and never use these products again, as they cause gastric ulcers and poor wound healing.
  • Alcohol is to be avoided one year post operatively; it is a good idea to avoid alcohol at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • A preoperative liquid diet will be prescribed based on patient's BMI. Liquid diets can be 2 weeks or as little as one day. This will be discussed in the last nutrition class.
  • Make a plan to be out of work after surgery. We recommend 2 weeks for sedentary jobs and up to 6 weeks for heavy lifting , strenuous positions.
